While most weaned foals receive ample feed (hay and pasture), the concentrated feeds they are given can vary significantly in terms of quality and quantity. Early rapid growth may lead to significant nutritional deficiencies in sport and purebred horses. While the needs for cobalt, iron, and manganese are adequately met by various diets, the quantities of other micronutrients may differ. Some breeding operations for sport horses primarily use hay (pastures) and provide little to no concentrated feed. In such cases, the intake of trace elements and vitamins D and E is insufficient and rarely meets the horse's needs. On the other hand, other intensive feeding practices are quite similar to those used for adult horses. In this case, the intake of micronutrients is better but still inadequate to meet all the specific and high demands of growing foals.
